The Crombie family has been supplying the residents of Hudson with home, building and construction supplies over the span of three generations of the owners. Over the years the store has expanded from operating out of a shed-type structure to a large, airy post and beam store designed and built with local expertise.
The store is a member of Castle Building Centre, yet it remains an independent traditional, small-town hardware store where customers can buy nails, screws and plumbing fixtures individually or by the pound, and where the owners provide advice about local building code and issues. Residents and local builders can count on being able to bring a broken part and have knowlegeable staff find a replacement for them, whether it is for their toilet or other plumbing, or for their furnace humidifier. Larger items are delivered for a nominal charge and are carried into the house and placed where the customer wants. Even obscure items are often found in the large, outdoor storage area.
Our hardware store is built on the knowledge our employees and the services we offer. We have specialists on-site to give you detailed technical information on all our products from paint to plumbing to electrical.
We offer help in all your renovatioin needs including: choosing windows and doors, roofing, all flooring materials, decking, drainage, concrete, structural posts and beams, mouldings, etc. If we don’t have it, we’ll be sure to find it for you.
With the environment at the forefront of our consciousness, we all need to do our own little part and, as a whole, we can heal the Earth. At Hudson Hardware we have begun the hunt for environmentally responsible products such as cleaning agents, biodegradable bags, rain barrels, composters, solar lights and recycled paint, just to name a few.
In 1949, Hudson Hardware & Supplies Ltd. Was formed to service the needs of the growing villages of Como, Hudson and Hudson Heights. At the time, there was no dedicated hardware building/supply store in the village. It started with an old airplane hangar that was moved down the Ottawa River on the ice from St-Eugene, Ontario, and up to 27 Yacht Club Road by way of the Hudson Yacht Club. The hardware department, with most of the goods being sold from drawers, was the main focus, with building supplies in the back and a functioning yard. All materials were loaded and unloaded by hand.
In 1984, the new post and beam store was built in its current location, which gives us 8,000 square feet of retail space. The “Old Store” was used as storage. The new store opened its doors February 1, 1985.
In February of 1997, Hudson Hardware lost the original building to a devastating fire. The entire Hudson Fire Department and neighbouring fire stations worked valiantly to save the new building by keeping a constant flow of water on the old building.
Hudson Hardware can proudly say we have been serving the needs of the community for more than 60 years, with good products, good service and a great deal of local support. Here’s to the next 60!
